In this gallery, a bunch of photos from two separate trips, one to Kenya (September 2013), one to Tanzania (December 2013). I did mess around a bit
with processing - once again, there will be quite a lot of black and white shots.
Mombasa is an old city on the coast of Kenya, and feels very much like Brynnlaw (the fictional pirate city from the game Baldur's Gate II).ISO 200, 70mm, f/5.0, 1/640s.
Due to Arab/Persian conquest of the coast of Kenya, there are plenty of Muslims there to this day, and therefore quite a few mosques.ISO 200, 62mm, f/4.8, 1/2500s.
The preferred local means of transport are matatus - once dangerous, now with more strict requirements around safety. The front seat
is still called the death seat anyway, and they allow too many people in. The man on the left is the one collecting money for the ride.ISO 200, 11mm, f/2.8, 1/100s.
This is a boy in a Quranic school - there were no girls there. The classroom was in the same building as the mosque, which apparently is one of two mosques in the world with two Qiblas,
the other one being in Medina. The teacher, presumably the imam, was kind enough to show us around (the mosque was locked), and did not ask for any money.ISO 640, 18mm, f/3.5, 1/80s.
A tired lioness with her prey. We waited a bit for her to open the zebra, but it didn't happen soon enough, and we left. She looked completely exhausted.ISO 200, 200mm, f/10.0, 1/400s.
Christian women after a mass. I had to guilt the guard into letting me in ("Well, in my country, you are welcome in any temple!").ISO 3200, 18mm, f/3.5, 1/30s.
This guy embraced me and kissed me on the face, after he failed to do the same thing to my friend, who ran away. Also, he broke my ring flash.ISO 200, 24mm, f/14.0, 1/250s.
